What is the church? The church is man
when his awed soul goes out,
In reverence to a mystery that swathes
him all about.
When any living man in awe gropes
Godward in search;
Then in that hour, that living man
becomes the living church,
Then, though in wilderness or in waste,
his soul is swept along
Down naves of prayer, through aisles of
praise, up alter-stairs of song.
And where man fronts the Mystery with
spirit bowed in prayer,
There is the universal church the church
of God is there.

The Manna from the sky and the water brought forth
from Mt. Sinai by Moses, for those on their journey
from Egypt to the Promised Land, did not come from
Moses, but from God. Lest, a few of those leading
the flock err in forgetting that they are
only the shepherds and not GOD.

You are Peter, a stone;
and upon this rock
I will build my church;
and all the powers of hell
shall not prevail against it!
And I will give you the keys
of the Kingdom of Heaven;
whatever doors you lock on earth
shall be locked in heaven;
and whatever doors you open on earth
shall be open in heaven!
Matthew 16: 18-19

Church
A reading church is an informed church;
An informed church is an interested church;
An interested church is an acting church;
An acting church is a serving church;
A serving church is a Christian church.

The Minister is to be a live man, a real man,
a true man, a simple man, great in his love,
great in his life, great in his work, great in
his simplicity, great in his gentleness.

The Preacher who deals with the great truths of
holy character must impersonate those truths.
There is power inherent in truth;
but it is often like electricity,
needing a conductor to develop it.
The preacher who best commends the truth
of the gospel to his hearers is he who
has translated that truth into his own
life, until his life is full of it
and redolent of it.

Ministers should not be merely like dials
on watches, or milestones on the road,
but like clocks and sirens,
to sound the alarm to sinners.
Aaron wore bells as well as
pomegranates, and the prophets
were commanded to lift up their
voices like a trumpet. A sleeping
sentinel may be the loss of the city.

A celebrated preacher being asked,
"How long does it take you to prepare
an address?" replied, "If I am only to
speak for fifteen or twenty minutes,
it requires a least a week's preparation
and prayerful thought beforehand;
if I may occupy thirty or forty minutes,
two or three days' preparation will do,
but if I may speak for an hour,
a few minutes forethought will be sufficient.

I remember that in the time of childhood
I was very religious; I rose in the night,
was punctual in the performance of my devotins,
and abstinent. One night I had been sitting
in the presence of my father,
not having closed my eyes during
the whole time, and with the Koran
in my embrase, whilst numbers around us
were asleep. I said to my father:
"Not one of these lifeth up his head
to perform his genuflexions,
but they are all so fast asleep
you would say they are dead."
He replied: thou also wert asleep
than to be searching out the faults of mankind.
The boaster sees nothing but himself,
having a veil of conceit before his eyes.
If he were endowed with an eye
capable of discerning God,
he would not discern any person
weaker than himself.

The Old Time Religion
Someone has said,
"If we could get religion like a Baptist,
experience it like a Methodist,
be positive about it like a Disciple,
be proud of it like an Episcopalian,
pay for it like a Presbyterian,
propagate like an Adventist,
and enjoy it like a Negro,
that would be some religion!"

We are building many splendid churches
in this country, but we are not providing
leaders to run them. I would rather
have a wooden church with a splendid
parson than a splendid church Drury.

The church is not a dormitory for sleepers,
it is an institution for workers;
it is not a rest camp,
