Saint Patrick's Day Legend
of the Snakes of Ireland
Saint Patrick is known world wide for having driven the snakes from Ireland.
One legend tells of Saint Patrick standing on top of a hill while holding his wooden staff, and banishing the snakes for from Ireland by driving them into the sea forever.
St. Patrick was abducted when he was 16 yrs. old,
from his home in Kilpatrick and made into a slave.
Six years later, he escaped to Gaul, where he was
ordained as a deacon, then priest and then as a bishop.
Saint Patrick was later sent back to Ireland to preach the gospel.
He told his followers that the three leaves of the
shamrock, represented the Trinity, and that the stem was
the symbol for the Godhead.
The way in which the snake came about, was that an
old snake was told to leave Ireland and he
refused. St. Patrick then made a small box and
asked the snake to enter it. The snake said no,
because it was too small. After much arguing
between the two, the snake finally went in,
just to show St. Patrick that it was too small
and uncomfortable. St. Patrick immediately shut
the box and threw it into the sea.
St. Patrick's Day is not only celebrated by the Irish,
but by many different countries. As a child, I always
wore something green so that I would not be pinched.
